Lately, I have been in several discussions reflecting on the reasons for passwords in our generation. Only about 2 decades ago, our parents had little or nothing to worry as passwords were not necessary. Today, we live in a fast changing world and we are challenged with an ever increasing need for passwords each day.
For instance, an average professional has between 6 to 10 passwords to cram on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. The use of passwords in the life of an average professional starts right at the beginning of the day when he needs to gain access to his office if it requires a password. Logging into the computer at work; accessing the company software application; checking our ‘yahoo’ or ‘hotmail’ accounts’ e-mails and messenger accounts; checking the online bank accounts require passwords and in some cases more than 1; your pension fund account; the ATM pin, social networking pages such as ‘Facebook’, ‘MySpace’ and ‘Youtube’ account also adds to the daily dilemma of keeping passwords in the head. |

With the increasing use of the world wide web in the Nigeria, social media has also seen a big boost in audience from Nigerian sources. Social Media is the use of electronic and internet tools for the purpose of sharing and discussing information and experiences with other people. Social media takes different forms including forums, blogs, wikis, podcasts, pictures, videos and e-magazines. Social media encompasses all the services that define the much touted 'web 2.0'. The idea behind it is to get the audience involved in the process of browsing the world wide web. The internet for a long time was known to be a source of information and a tool to pass information across which made it work like a library. In recent years, the internet has evolved to become more of a community where information can be researched, shared and contributed to. This does not strip the internet of its library-like model but adds user interaction and collaboration to it. That is what 'web 2.0' or social media is all about.

Nigeria is fast incorporating the internet applications that transformed businesses in developing and developed countries around the world. With the advent of mobile banking, online card processing and internet payment solutions, Nigerian businesses are well positioned to tap into the vast possibilities available through the internet for cost effective business growth. In developed countries, the availability of the internet and related applications heralded the emergence of businesses with infinite possibilities. The internet gave businesses the ability to sell and market their goods and services to people in almost any part of the world. It also gave rise to a new genre of businesses that ran on the internet full time and had all their processes fully automated with little or no need for a large office or ton of employees thereby cutting costs and increasing profits. Even brick and mortar businesses had to take advantage of this trend in order to remain competitive in the minds of their consumers. Companies such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City in the United States of America and the others had to create an internet storefront with even cheaper prices and incentives than their physical locations because of the amount of costs they could save as a result of running their businesses on the internet.
