Sturvs.com LogoSocial Bookmarking is a method for internet users to store, organize and manage bookmarks of web pages on the internet with the help of metadata. Internet social bookmarking websites give users the ability to open accounts which they will use to store their bookmarks and organize them with tags. Users of such social bookmarking sites can access their bookmarks from any computer in the world as long as it has an internet connection unlike bookmarks on a browser that are only accessible on the computer which they were stored.

Another special feature of social bookmarking is the fact that people's bookmarks are publicly shared as various other users explore the social bookmarking site. When users see relevant bookmarks, they can vote for those bookmarks in order to increase their publicity on the site. Usually, important information and relevant news are usually well voted for and shown on the frontpage as the hottest or most popular links. This feature makes social bookmarking websites a good resource to get relevant and interesting news rather than sifting through the internet from website to website.

As applies to Nigerians on the internet, the largest and most important social bookmarking website is Sturvs.com. Sturvs.com according to the founder; Temi Kolawole is a social bookmarking site to share Nigerian links, articles, news, music, videos and other content relevant to Nigerians on the internet. Sturvs.com has started in April 2007 and has grown considerably since then to a great resource which it is today. For now, sturvs.com looks to be used mostly by companies and individuals servicing the entertainment industry but they also gather news from most Nigerian dailies that have websites and resources on the internet.

In the last few months, sturvs.com has seen as consistent rise in their traffic and user base. As of the writing of this article, Alexa.com; a website that attempts to measure the traffic attracted by websites on the internet rated Sturvs.com 87,812 (where 1 is the website with the highest rank). They have also gotten a lot of media attention as website such as mynaijanews.com, startupsnigeria.com and notjustok.com have featured them in articles and interviews. They have also received a lot of reviews and comments from Nigerians in all parts of the world approving them and applauding their usability.

From my own point of view, sturvs.com is a great resource and has done a good job publicizing themselves with various tools and strategies which they've developed on the internet. A big step they made was developing a facebook(1) application and publicizing themselves there by starting a group and synchronizing their services with them. Sturvs.com has a a lot of potential and a good team of developers working to improve its usability. There has been a trend on the internet that most websites focused on Nigeria fail because of the poor availability of usable internet connections in Nigeria but this standard is quickly changing with the emergence of cheaper ISPs and resources like Sturvs.com to improve the internet experience of an average Nigerian. Corporate managements and executives that are based in Nigeria or planning to service Nigerians should also look towards Sturvs.com for internet marketing and publicity as it exclusively attracts the Nigerian audience.
