The implementation of a national identification system though beneficial is faced with challenges and a myriad of problems ranging from financial to socio-cultural issues. To successfully implement the national identification system in Nigeria, the following must be done;

Build awareness on the necessity of a national identification system. Political and ethnic fears need to be assuaged so that people are aware of the benefits of a national identification system.

2) Overhaul the National Identification Framework
Institutions for birth registration (i.e. the National Civic Registration, now a part of the National Identity Management Commission) have to be overhauled to ensure that births are accurately and completely recorded.

3) Inclusion of Biometric Features
In this age, Nigeria cannot afford a national identification system without biometric features. This would ensure a fool proof identification system that is less subject to imitations and forgery.

Interestingly, the national drivers’ license would have provided a very good means of identification to fill the void caused by a lack of a national identification system, however, its use is limited to only people who can drive and the driver’s license issuance process in Nigeria is riddled with corruption and abuse.
